Mike Pence and limited career opportunities for women
If you go to the online contact form for U.S. Congressman Mike Pence, the representative from the 6th District of Indiana, you’ll notice the list of prefixes that are available to you as you enter your contact information:
- Mr.
- Ms.
- Miss.
- Mrs.
- Mr. and Mrs.
- Dr.
- Dr. and Mrs.
- The Reverend
- Father
- The Reverend and Mrs.
Apparently, Congressman Pence does not believe in the following career/family orientation possibilities:
- Dr. and Mr.
- The Reverend and Mr.
- Sister
- Mother
And what about:
- The Reverend Dr. and Mr.
- The Reverend Dr. and Mrs.
- The Very Reverend Dr.
- The Most Reverend of Doctors and Fathers Everywhere
- Prince
- Princess
- King
- Queen
- …
Of course, the ides of having an exhaustive list of prefixes is a bit silly in itself, but if you’re going to bother, you might as well not so obviously omit the possibility that a woman could be the doctor or pastor in the family. That’s so last century.
As a member of a “Dr. and Mr.” household, I appreciate that you’ve pointed out this conservative congressman’s Freudian slip of world view.

Well I’m told that independent, mo.dern, feminist, high achieving women don’t want/need to marry. In fact I’ve even heard it said that marrying is so last century. So that would mean that women “Dr.”s who are married would be so extremely rare that it would be pointless to consider the need for a “Dr. and Mr.” option. Agree?
